Vehicle Defects – In the majority of automobile accidents, the drivers are usually at fault. But not always. Sometimes serious injuries result from vehicle defects. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), describes a vehicle defect as something that “poses a risk to motor vehicle safety, and may exist in a group of vehicles of the same design or manufacture, or items of equipment of the same type and manufacture.”
A current example of this is the Takata Airbag which has affected 19 different automakers. Airbags are supposed to save lives, but in some cases the mechanism used to inflate the airbags during an accident have ruptured. sending metal shards through the airbag and into the vehicle’s passenger cabin. This defect (so far) has resulted in 11 deaths and approximately 180 injuries.
