What happens if the other driver involved in the accident is not insured or has minimal coverage?

If you’ve been injured in a car accident, it’s hard to recover from a driver who is not insuranced or who has insurance with low limits. It’s typical for a person with no insurance or low limits not to have assets that can compensate you for your injury.

In those cases, we look to your policy to see if you have uninsured motorist coverage. Uninsured Motorist coverage (or UM) is coverage that you buy under your own policy. It is designed to protect you in this event.

We recommend that all of our clients look at their policies to see if they have uninsured motorist coverage. It’s really not very expensive and it’s good coverage that protects you, not the other driver.
